Top 3 multiplayer exploits in Modern Warfare 2

Glitch, exploit, cheat, etc., these dirty tricks have many names. There’s always one guy who figures out how to do something completely messed up in a video game. Flying out of a Map in Halo 3, getting under a map in World at War, etc, there’s always one asshole that messes things up for the rest of us.

Modern Warfare 2 is no exception. After the jump, I’ll show you the top three exploits that players use in Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer and how to get them banned.

Much thanks to SGC member Kickimanjaro for the intel.

The first exploit is the famed “Javelin Glitch” that was recently published across the Internets, which will (hopefully) go bye bye with a forthcoming patch. In the meantime, here’s how it works:

Dickhead A switches to his Javelin (or any other secondary launcher, but Javelin works best), then holds RB (you must have the Semtex grenade equipped). While still holding the Semtex, press Y to switch back to your Javelin. Now you have a super-martyrdom. When someone kills you, you will blow the ever lovin’ crap out of them and anyone within a 50 foot radius. Thanks A-hole.

Next up, is the care package cloning trick that will allow you to get an infinite amount of care pacakage or emergency air drops. Here’s how you do it:

Dickhead A gets a care package, swap out weapons with a weapon on the ground, stab mid swap. After you’ve done that you’ll hear a click. Then you’re ready to go. Throw a special grenade, then throw the care package grenade, rinse and repeat. Nice job A-hole.

Last, but certainly not least, is the super speed special care package grenade exploit. This exploit will allow you to run around while holding a care package grenade at ridiculous speeds, allowing you to knife the crap out of the other team. Here’s how you do it:

Dickhead A simply presses right on the d-pad to switch to whatever Killstreak you have that requires throwing a grenade for placement (Care package, Sentry gun, Emergency air drop). While holding the grenade you can move really fast. Adding light weight and marathon will allow you to run around at a crazy high speed. While you’re holding the grenade, you’ll still be able to knife people, so grief away A-hole.

Best Classes for COD MW2

Max Kill

Weapon: M16 w/ holographic site and grenade launcher
Sidearm: Glock with akimbo and silencer
Perk 1: Bling
Perk 2: Stopping Power
Perk 3: Commando

Comments: This is a basic package that you’ll be able to play as after level 40. Lower level alternate would be the TAR-21 instead of the M16. The M16 is a beast, coupled with a noob tube, akimbo Glocks and Commando (Preferably Commando Pro) for close in knife kills is easily the best loadout in the game to maximize kill potential.

Alternate: If you have Ninja Pro, swap that out for Commando to make you slightly more stealthy.

Anti-Air

Weapon: RPD with Grip
Sidearm: Stinger
Perk 1: Scavenger
Perk 2: Cold Blooded
Perk 3: Commando

Comments: Every good player should have an anti-air pre-set class ready to deploy when the enemy killstreaks start coming. Nothing turns a tide faster than a well placed Harrier or Pavelow Helicopter. When going after aircraft, it’s important to have cold blooded equipped to make you invisible to the enemy so you can get your shot off. Sure, Stopping Power Pro is nice, but if you get smoked before you even get the shot off, what is the point? Scavenger is important to pick up extra Stinger missiles and using the RPD or any of your favorite light machine gun is recommended to maximize your killing power against airborne targets.

Super Stealth

Weapon: SCAR w/ silencer
Sidearm: USP with tactical knife
Perk 1: Scavenger Pro
Perk 2: Cold blooded Pro
Perk 3: Ninja Pro

Comments: This loadout will make you completely invisible. Your shots won’t register on the radar, you can’t be seen by UAV, Thermal sights, sentry guns, heartbeat sensors and your footsteps will be silent. If you’re patient, you’ll rack up kills, use scavenger to pick up ammo from your kills and stay alive for quite a while. This class is great for the patient player looking to get the drop on campers and players who like to counter snipe.

Alternatives: You can use virtually any weapon, but with the SCAR’s great iron sights, accuracy and damage, it makes a great weapon to use with a silencer, and your low magazine size will be compensated by your low profile. Other options include the ACR, FAMAS and M16 for their accuracy. Stay away from Sub machine guns with this class, because you’ll decrease your range too much with the silencer to be a useful counter sniper.

Flash Killer

Weapon: Any sub machine gun w/holographic site
Sidearm: Ranger w/ akimbo
Perk 1: Marathon Pro
Perk 2: Lightweight Pro
Perk 3: Commando Pro

Comments: This class is a beast for any player. With your sub machine gun you can engage enemies at any range, but the trick with this class is to keep moving. As long as you’re moving, you’ll be the fastest thing in the map, allowing you to easily flank enemies, campers and snipers quickly. With dual ranger shot guns, you’ll blast anything in your path that is just out of reach of your knife. If you can keep moving, stay out of open spaces and stay away from medium to long distance firefights, you can dominate on any map.

Alternates: Using a pistol with the tactical knife turns this class into a knife wielding maniac. The pro is that you’ll stay relatively stealthy and rack up numerous humiliation kills on your enemy. The con is that you won’t have the twin boomsticks to simply obliterate enemies up close.

Search and Destroyer

Weapon: TAR-21 with heartbeat sensor and Full Metal Jacket
Sidearm: Glock with FMJ and silencer
Perk 1: Bling Pro
Perk 2: Stopping Power Pro
Perk 3: Sit Rep Pro

Comments: The TAR-21 is a personal favorite, but coupled with the heartbeat sensor and full metal jacket is a great combo on some of the smaller maps, or during a Team Deathmatch where you can find the bad guy with the sensor, and then smoke them behind a wall with full metal jacket equipped. I put the Glock as a secondary weapon for close quarters, and Sit Rep Pro for seeking out behind the lines enemies and defensive explosives.

Alternatives: Any weapon with heartbeat sensor is useful.

Noob Tube Machine

Weapon: Any assault rifle with Grenade Launcher
Sidearm: One Man Army
Equipment: Grenades or Semtex
Perk 1: One Man Army
Perk 2: Danger Close Pro
Perk 3: Last Stand Pro

Comments: Here’s how it works. With the Danger Close your noob tube will be god-like. While Scavenger will allow you to pick up one extra grenade for your launcher, using One Man Army will allow you to switch to a new class, fully equipped with two grenades for your launcher. Use up those two grenades, switch classes back to the same class and so on and so forth. Be advised, you will piss off the opposition, but that’s kind of the point, right?

That’s it for now. If you have a loadout you want to tell the world about, please comment and share the wealth below!

How to be a Douche at COD MW2

After playing Modern Warfare 2′s multiplayer for a while, you tend to get bored with your standard setups.

Being tactical just doesn’t hold as much fun as it used to. To keep the game fresh, you may try to find ways to piss off other players within the game itself.  Many successful and completely fair ways have been used to irritate the other team into rage quiting.

Whether you want to sport the noobtube class with one man army, or run around with double shotties, your goal is to piss off the other team as much as possible.  What if I told you those setups don’t even come close to the amount of douchiness that you can achieve in this game.

The best way to piss off the other team is… after the jump!

Imagine being able to run so fast that the enemy team cannot even find time to aim at you before you send them to their doom.  Imagine being able to appear into a room of three baddies, and exit within the blink of an eye with a trail of dead bodies behind you.  Sounds pretty amazing right? Well, this can be achieved through completely legit methods.

I call it the “care package menace”.

The setup is simple enough.

  1. Get a four kill streak with the care package kill streak equipped.
  2. Switch to your knife class, and select right on the D-pad.
  3. Now “Run, Forrest Run”!

You will be without any doubt, THE fastest person on the map.  Think you were fast with your knife class before? Think again.  Once you try out this bad boy combination, you will probably not want to go back to your regular knife class again; there’s just no comparison.  You will feel slower if you switch back to your regular knife class.

The care package menace does have its downsides though.  First of all, you will have nothing for long range.  You will have to knife the person.

Secondly, climbing over obstacles will force you to switch back to your weapon.  While that one is a minor annoyance, it may cost you a life at one point.

Finally, it is a lot tougher to hit your target when using this setup. If you aren’t careful, you will fly right by the person and be completely embarrassed as you get shot or knifed in the back.  However, if you hone your skills, you will be able be a menace on the battlefield.

And to top this all off, the most evil thing you can do with this setup would be to play some capture the flag.  As Dave, MosEisley, Thothexy and McChicken can attest, this thing can wreck the enemy team while giving yourselves a nice score to boot. Each capture nets you 250 points.  In one match, we were able to go 16-1.

You do the math.

Simply put, all you  have to do is create an assembly line.  One person waits at the flag until it is captured.  He grabs it and runs for home.  While he is doing this, the next person in line waits for the flag to be reset. This class is so deadly, that I’ve been able to knife the enemy who has our flag while carrying their flag.  Talk about humiliation!

Well there you have it: how to achieve the douchiest move in all of Modern Warfare 2.

Expert’s Guide to Modern Warfare 2’s Multiplayer

If you’ve come this far, you’re past level 40. You’ve used our Newbie Guide and our  Advanced guide to power level your way past level 40. You’re becoming an expert. Welcome to the road to your first Prestige. From here on out, you will be more lethal than you have ever been. You’ll have options on top of options. Perks on top of perks. The question is, now that you have so much to choose from, where do you go from here and how can you maximize your xp, map awareness and lethality to be the baddest mofo in the field?

Read on to become an expert at Modern Warfare 2.

In this guide I’m going to touch on notable weapons and perks and give advice as to how to best use these tools to stack XP and increase your lethality, so you can take your Multiplayer game to the next level.

Assault Rifles – Assault Rifles should be your default weapon in any MW2 match. An Assault Rifle’s all around usefulness is second to none. Once you’ve hit level 40, the game changes quite a bit. You’ll unlock the M16, then the ACR, the F2000 and finally, the AK-47. These are arguably the best assault rifles in the game. First up, the M16. If you’ve played CoD4 at all, you’ll immediately feel comfortable with this weapon and it’s lethal three shot burst. If you haven’t played CoD4, the M16 is a short, medium and long range beast. Couple it with scavenger, stopping power and your Perk 3 of choice and you’ll be a killing beast on the field. It has long range accuracy, giant killing stopping power and is an all around beast on the field.

Next up is the ACR. If you enjoyed the accuracy and rapid fire of the M16, but disliked the burst fire, then the ACR is for you. The ACR is the most accurate Assault Rifle in the game. You can basically put your sight on a bad guy and pull the trigger until he/she dies. There is little to no muzzle drift, or kick from the gun at all. What you sacrifice is stopping power, which means that you’ll likely have to use Stopping Power as your default Perk 2 with this weapon. This weapon is fantastic for counter sniping and if you’re the type of player that struggles with weapon accuracy, then this gun will help you quite a bit.

The second to last Assault Rifle you’ll unlock is the F2000. This gun is basically a short range beast. Unfortunately there are a myriad of other weapons that are far better than this weapon at short range, including any of the shot guns, machine pistols or SMG’s in the game. This weapon has a wicked fire rate, one of the highest in the game, but has no accuracy at either medium or long range. The default weapon’s iron sights are one of the worst in the game as well, but if you can get your 25 kills and unlock the red dot sight, the weapon’s usefulness increases exponentially. If you’re a run and gun type player, this weapon will serve you well with it’s combination of fast fire rate and high stopping power.

Finally, at level 70, you’ll unlock the AK-47. The gun itself has been nerfed a little bit from CoD4, in that the iron sights are not as accurate and the gun’s stopping power is a bit less, but fans of the weapon will find this to have a great combination of stopping power, clip size and accuracy at medium range. The biggest problem you’ll face is that at level 70, you’ll likely be very close to finishing up challenges associated with other Assault Rifles and obtaining the huge XP bonuses that go along with them, which makes the decision to use the AK-47 a difficult one. In my personal experience, the usefulness of the AK-47 is not so great that it trumps finishing up weapon challenges with any of the other rifles. Unless you’re an AK-47 fanboy, skip it until you prestige.

Machine Guns – The only Light Machine Gun, or LMG you’ll unlock is the M240. This weapon has a great fire rate, but lacks the stopping power of the AUG HBAR, which is the best LMG in the game. The M240 makes up for this with an increased ammo capacity. Not a bad LMG, and if you’re locking down a point or playing defense, this weapon’s accuracy and ammo capacity can be an asset for experienced players. Generally speaking, none of the LMG’s in the game are better than an Assault Rifle, which is a shortcoming of MW2 when compared to CoD4’s kick ass LMG’s.

Sub Machine Guns – The Uzi is the only sub machine gun you unlock after level 40 (level 44) and is easily the best sub machine gun in the game. This weapon has very little muzzle drift when firing extended bursts and is the only sub machine gun that really gets better when using Rapid Fire. Fire in bursts at medium range with Rapid fire or full auto at close range to mop up anyone left standing. This is best used with marathon and lightweight for maximum efficiency.

Secondary Weapons – As you level up, your secondary weapons be come so much more valuable. Whether you’re unlocking the Stinger at level 30 to shoot down aircraft, or the Model 1887 at level 67, your secondary weapon becomes as useful as your primary weapon. That said, the most important thing to remember when picking your secondary weapon is to pick a weapon that compliments your primary weapon. For this section, I’m going to give secondary weapon recommendations based on how they compliment their primary weapon counterparts.

1) Shotguns – For the most part, shotguns are the preferred weapon for close up kills. The AA-12, or the M1014 are great short range killers for a player that likes to use sniper rifles or play a counter sniper. The AA-12 fires faster, but the M1014 is more accurate and lethal. Use your long range primary when outside and your AA-12or M1014 when inside. The AA-12 is best used with scavenger, as you only get two 8 round magazines and those go quick.

The other shotguns that you’ll unlock after level 40 are the Ranger and the infamous Model 1887. Both are best when used akimbo, with marathon, lightweight and ninja. The akimbo Ranger gets the nod at short range and the Model 1887 is great at short and medium range. In fact, it was so good at medium range that Infinity Ward actually made a patch to nerf it, however, it is still an effective weapon. These weapons compliment a sub machine gun primary and are best used when running around at full speed indoors.

2) Machine Pistols – The Machine Pistols are great weapons in MW2. The Glock and PP2000 are  both great secondary weapons for players that want a complimentary weapon for their Primary, but don’t want to sacrifice range. The M93 Raffica is basically a modified M9 that can fire three round bursts like the FAMAS or M16. It has great medium range power, but sacrifices short range lethality. Great for a player that plays a conservative game, or a sniper that is looking for a good medium to short range sub machine gun type weapon. Finally the TMP is one of the last secondary weapons you unlock and it is a great upgrade over the Glock and PP2000. The TMP has the longest range and is the most accurate Machine Pistol in the game. Unfortunately, you unlock it so late, but while you have it, make use of it with any class, as it is as good as any of the sub machine guns in the game.

3) Pistols – Pistols in this game only become useful once you’ve unlocked the tactical knife, which makes your knife strikes much faster and when paired with marathon, lightweight and commando, is one of the most fun load outs in the game. For more information on power leveling pistols, click here.

4) Launchers – After level 40, you’ll unlock the Javelin at level 50 and the RPG-7 at level 65. Combine these launchers with a noob tube and Danger Close to maximize your lethality.

The Javelin works just like the Stinger, but is also able to lock on other players as well. It’s cumbersome to use and leaves you exposed when using against ground targets. Not a recommended secondary weapon.

The RPG – 7 is a serviceable secondary weapon, comparable to the Thumper in terms of lethality. The RPG-7 is best used with Danger Close and from an elevated position, while firing at enemies from medium range. On Sub Base, get to the second floor and you can dominate the open ground in Domination. Unfortunately, the RPG – 7 is incredibly inaccurate at long range and is not recommended to be used against air targets.

Perks – You’ll only unlock a few perks after level 40. Fortunately, these new perks will increase what you can do in the field by quite a bit. I’ll discuss them below and show you how to maximize their effectiveness.

At level 41 you’ll unlock last stand. Last stand is just as you remembered from CoD 4 and WaW, with a few notable exceptions. First, you can crawl around on the ground in Last Stand in MW2. Second, you’ll only be in Last Stand for about 10 seconds and you cannot be revived. Last Stand Pro allows you to use equipment in Last Stand, such as grenades and secondary grenades, to increase your lethality. If you play Headquarters Pro, Domination or Demolition, Last Stand should be your perk of choice as your enemy will have to basically kill you twice to get you out of the competition and off of an objective. If you’re quick on the trigger, you won’t give your enemy a second chance to finish you off. Of note, you can knife bad guys which is useful for when you run out of ammo and don’t have time to reload. You’ll be surprised at how many dumb asses try to run up and knife you while you’re down. If you’re quick, you can turn the tables on that player’s poor choice.

At level 45, you’ll unlock One Man Army. This perk is new to the series and offers a smart player a wide potential of uses on the battlefield. With One Man Army, you’ll be able to switch classes on the fly, which means that if an enemy unsuspectingly launches a Harrier or AC-130 strike, you can quickly and effectively switch to your anti-air class and take that threat down without dying.  Where One Man Army shines though is when you want to go noob tubing. When using a noob tube with your favorite Assault Rifle, once you’ve expended two grenades, use One Man Army, pick the same kit, and come back fully loaded. Great for defense and general harassment of your enemy.

The final perk you’ll unlock is Danger Close. Great for noob tubing. Use it with One Man Army above and rack up the kills.  Danger Close Pro also makes your air strike killstreaks much more deadly. Use Danger Close with your noob tube, explosive equipment of your choice and Martyrdom for maximum lethality.

Sniper Rifles – The last sniper rifle you’ll unlock after Level 40 is the M14 EBR. While the EBR was a great weapon in the single player game, it’s usefulness in Multiplayer is far less. Stick to any one of the other three sniper rifles and stay far away from this useless piece of crap.

General tips – For expert players, finding a combination of the best perks and weapons is something that is a personal choice. Generally, with your five custom classes, you should try and have five different load outs that are useful in a variety of situations, to combat anything thrown in your way. Recommended custom load outs are:

1 – Anti air class – use your launcher of choice with cold blooded to take out aircraft killstreaks.

2 – Fast mover class – whether your using a tactical knife with a USP or akimbo Rangers or Model 1887’s with the marathon and lightweight perks, a fast mover class is great for taking flags in CTF, moving from point to point in Domination or Demolition, or harassing an enemy in Team Deathmatch.

3 – Noob tuber – One Man Army, Danger Close and noob tube of choice is great for maps like Terminal, Wasteland, Invasion and other maps that require you to stay put to win.Change this up with a Thumper and Scavenger if you want to run and gun.

4 – Assault class – Pick your assault rifle of choice and go with Bling, Scavenger or Slight of Hand, a shot gun of choice and Stopping Power for when you need to take it to an enemy in any situation and will likely be your default class on any map.

5 – Silent class – Silenced weapon, cold blooded and ninja, combined with scavenger will keep you alive for a long time. Great for sneaking around in Team Deathmatch or in hardcore matches.

If you use these five groups together, you’ll be an expert capable of taking on anything MW2 throws at you. With these load outs you’ll maximize your XP until you Prestige and gain another slot for a custom load out along with the Prestige perks that give you bonus XP when you reach certain kill counts with the various weapons at your disposal and additional titles and emblems to play with.

Advanced Player’s Guide to Modern Warfare 2’s Multiplayer

If you survived long enough to shed that Newbie status,it’s time to start playing with the big boys in Modern Warfare 2.  In our Advanced Player’s guide, we’ll navigate the levels of 18 through 39 and give you the tips and tricks you’ll need to power level and maximize your kill to death ratio. So, hit the jump, get your note pad out and lets do this!

Now that you’ve shed your “newbie” status, its time to start mixing things up a bit. Past level 18, you’ll unlock more exotic weapons, perks and equipment that may not make you more deadly, but will allow you to do different things on a map. For instance, at Level 19 you unlock the blast shield. This is equipped in game by pressing the right bumper or R1. This will give you added survivability against explosive damage.

Notable Equipment

Surviving explosive damage is the perfect foil against noob tubers, or those that use their grenade launcher or Thumper a lot. Not surprisingly, there are a TON of noob tubers, and for good reason, its very effective. What the blast shield will do will lessen indirect damage from explosions and allow you to outright survive direct grenade and grenade launcher attacks. Its an impressive piece of equipment used for players that enjoy playing a defensive game or to foil a particularly lethal noob tuber during a match. It is not without it’s issues, as while in the blast shield, you can’t see your radar.  A small disadvantage, depending on your play style, but worth noting.

On the other hand, if you like setting traps or want your backside covered while sniping, Claymores are excellent defensive weapons. I personally enjoy putting Claymores down in high traffic areas and racking up the kills. Of note, you can stand directly behind a Claymore when it goes off without taking any damage, so feel free to put them as close to you as you want.

Notable Primary Weapons

There are two impressive weapons that you will unlock that will be your bread and butter for the foreseeable future, the TAR-21 and the AUG HBAR. The TAR is an assault rifle that is much more powerful than the FAMAS and M4, but a bit less accurate than the SCAR-H. The trade off is that the TAR-21 has a larger magazine and fire rate, which will give your offensive game ten or so more rounds of lethality. When fired in bursts, the TAR is as accurate as any weapon in the game, furthermore, the increased magazine will lessen your overall deaths while reloading, which is your most vulnerable time during any MP match. Overall, I believe that the TAR-21 is a superior weapon to the SCAR-H for all but the most tactical of players and a weapon you should keep in your five classes for a long time.

Next up is the AUG HBAR. While this weapon is classified as a Light Machine gun, it really handles more like an assault rifle, with the only noticeable trade off being slower movement. As a light machine gun, it does have a smaller magazine, as it is not belt or drum fed like the MG4, RPD or L86 LSW, but its accuracy and damage is very high. Overall, this is THE BEST LMG in the game. When combined with stopping power, marathon and the third perk of your choice, you can engage any target at close, medium or long range. This gun is a beast. Use it.

I think its worth noting that between levels 19 and 39 you will unlock the P90. As far as sub machine guns go, I’ve got to say skip it. While the P90 was perceived as a “god weapon” in CoD4, its usability in MW2 has been nerfed a bit. When compared to the stopping power of the UMP, or the accuracy of the Vector, I’ve got to take either one over the P90. There’s one thing that is not statistically measured amongst the weapons in Modern Warfare 2 and that is the muzzle kick, which is the amount of jump the gun’s barrel has when firing rounds. In my experience, the Vector has a very small kick when compared to the P90, and at the default iron sight level, the Vector is my preferred sub machine gun for accuracy and stopping power.  So, unless you’re looking to power level and throw your Kill to Death ratio out the window, I say skip the P90 for now.

Notable Secondary Weapons

You’ll unlock a few Secondary Weapons between levels 19 and 39. My two favorite are the Glock and the Striker. The G18, or Glock Model 18 is a machine pistol with a 31 round clip, while the Striker is a 30 round semi-automatic shotgun. Both are excellent short to medium range secondary weapons and both have their use in an MP match of any type.

The Glock, in particular, is a personal favorite. It’s a beast of a short range weapon, with stopping power that compares favorably to even the Magnum .44, but with full auto.  Sure, it kicks worse than a drunken mule, but at short range, it really can’t be beat until your unlock the sawed off shotgun called the “Ranger” at level 42. My preference is to put a silencer on it and take unsuspecting foes out silently which will keep me off people’s radar for a few more seconds, which is extremely useful in a Demolition or Domination match type.

The striker is just an all around useful shotgun. Its faster firing rate and comparable lethality makes it the preferred shotgun over the SPAS, and its control-ability makes it preferable to the arguably more lethal AA-12.

Notable Perks

Of the Perks that you unlock between 19 and 39, Cold Blooded, Final Stand, Ninja and Bling are the most immediately useful. Bling allows you to put two weapon attachments on your weapons, which is fantastic for obvious reasons. Final stand is the same as the CoD4 final stand and is also useful for obvious reasons. Of note, you will not be able to revive teammates who are in Final Stand, as you could do in World at War.

Of the new perks, Coldblooded and Ninja may be the most useful. Cold blooded allows you to be undetectable by Thermal Scopes, Air vehicles, UAV’s and sentry guns. Ninja, on the other hand, makes you invisible to heartbeat sensors and Ninja Pro makes you move silently. These two perks are most useful when used together to make you invisible to your enemy. These perks are extremely useful if you’re facing enemies that are getting a ton of kill streaks, as you’ll be invisible to enemy AC-130’s, Harriers, Attack Choppers, etc. This allows you to use the Stinger without fear of being killed by the enemy aircraft before getting the shot off. These perks can also be used effectively without the other, although, it really depends on how your enemy is playing. During Team Deathmatches, you’re most likely to see players with heartbeat sensors, which makes Ninja very useful to get the drop on your enemy.

Mix and match these weapons and perks as you see fit and enjoy, because after level 40, everything changes…

NOOB Guide to Modern Warfare 2’s Multiplayer

Good news noobs, Modern Warfare 2, is a tad more accessible for the new CoD player. Bad news? You still got to man up, strap on a pair and shoot straight. Until you learn to shoot straight, I’ve gathered tips from some great Modern Warfare 2 players and I’ll share them with you.

After the jump, of course! Your Newbie Guide to Modern Warfare 2’s Multiplayer awaits.

Until you reach about level 18, you’re in the beginning portion of the multiplayer game. That said, these tips are here to help you rank up and kick ass through level 18.

Starting off

At level 1, you’ll have five pre set classes to choose from. Lucky for you, they’re pretty strong classes. Some of those classes have perks that you will not unlock for quite a while, and as you use the pre set classes, kills you get with them act as they would with your own custom made classes, so feel free to use them even after you unlock custom classes at level 4.

As for what you should pick? Well, you’ve either played CoD4 or haven’t. If you haven’t played CoD4, go with the UMP. It’s a solid, all around weapon, with a red dot scope, that will serve you well until you can unlock your own preset classes.  If you have a weapon preference or love sniping, those choices are there for you too, but without intimate knowledge of the multiplayer maps, I’d stay away from sniping during your first go-around.

Level 4

Now that you’ve unlocked your own custom classes, it’s important that you begin leveling up as fast as possible. How do you do that? By sticking with one gun for as long as you can. With any weapon, at 10 kills you get an unlock, at 25 , you get another, 60, 75, 150 and so on and so forth. Unlocks equal big XP rewards, so it pays to stick with one gun until you’ve at least unlocked the silencer.

As you level up weapons, you’ll eventually unlock the grenade launcher, aka the noob tube. Use this. A lot. Noob tubes have that name for a reason. They’re great for getting easy kills. I can’t stress it enough.

As for which perks to pick, stick with slight of hand, stopping power and commando. These three perks will give you the best offensive attack power and will serve you well until you get a better handle on the maps, weapons, etc. Also, as with weapons, if you stick with the same perks, you’ll unlock the “pro” perks, which give you bonuses such as increased damage against vehicles (stopping power), no fall damage (commando) and increased zoom speed (slight of hand). As you unlock new levels of each perk, you get big XP bonuses which will help you level up faster.

General tips

When roaming around the maps, you may want to play a lot of Domination when first starting off. Domination gives the newbie help in two ways. First, it focuses the action at the three domination points, meaning that you won’t have to hunt down bad guys, because they’ll usually be at one of the three points, which lets you relax and play an offensive game. Second, it helps you get your way around the map, by providing map markers that identify three different locations on any given map, which will help you get a map’s layout down much quicker than fumbling around in a Team Deathmatch game.

Another thing to keep in mind is always be looking up. Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer maps feature much more verticality than CoD4 and most multiplayer shooters in general. We’re conditioned in MP games to look at one plane, what’s before us. We’re not conditioned to look up.  So, when running around, do two things. First, get to the high ground, whenever you can. Second, when wandering around, keep your eyes open on any window, hill, bunker, etc., because that’s where the bad guys will be.

Watch your radar. There are two things to keep in mind, first off, whenever you fire your un-silenced weapon, you will give away your position on the radar. Second, you can use this to your advantage when hunting the enemy. Keeping those two things in mind, it is very important to use your knife when in close to keep your profile off the radar when close to a bad guy.

When an enemy UAV pops up, you had better get your ass moving. Each pulse of the UAV will give off your position, however, if you keep moving, your enemy will not be able to get you locked down and you’ll be able to surprise a few unfortunate souls in the process. Knife them and move on. Don’t stay still. Also, you can shoot down UAV’s with your machine gun/sub-machine gun/ light machine gun, etc., so go for it, you’ll get XP for doing it and it disrupts the enemies plan of attack.

Speaking of flying enemies, shooting down UAV, Harriers, Helicopters, et al, will nab you a ton of XP. At the lower levels, this XP will help you level quickly, and at between 200 and 400 XP depending on the aircraft, it’s worth it to stop, look up and fire away.

Last tip

Pie off your corners. What that means is when rounding a corner, keep your aim focused at what is immediately around the corner as you move around the corner. Keep your body behind the corner, and slowly circle the corner.  Think of the tip of your gun as the sharp end of a pie slice. As you round a corner, you will spot campers much easier and you may even get the drop on a bad guy that got careless.

Alright, that’s it for now. If some of our more seasoned players have some more tips, please share them below.

A Few Basics

Movement

Always try to keep on the move, moving from 1 position to another. Be aware of your surroundings. If you move out in the open, try to plan in advance positions where you are going to run to next for cover, such as behind a wall, so if the enemy suddenly appears you have set places in your mind you can use for cover (Jihad is not always the best way to fight). If you are behind a wall or other such cover, and you appear from it and snipe at the enemy, crawl back down and move to another position. that way you wont be predictably appearing up from the same position which would make you a much easier target.

Airstrike? Predict enemy movement. (Obtained upon a 5 kill streak)

Before dropping an airstrike, try to narrow down the movement of the enemy players. When you launch the airstrike, don’t launch it exactly in the center of many red dots on the radar, instead, look at the map, study it and predict exactly where that all those enemies will be when that air strike hits. It takes about two seconds for the air strike to start kicking in, so enemies could easily dodge it if you launch it in a predictable area. Instead determine if the area of the red dots is an open area, Look for a good choking zone or a camping spot. Now predict where the enemy will be in the next few seconds. You can now launch the airstrike. This is how to rack up many kills with it.

Shoot that heli

Remember to shoot the helicopter. Even regular guns are effective against it. Every time you dont shoot it the person who called it suppose dies and gets another five kills and maybe 7 and calls chopper after chopper. Now you are getting your ass handed to you every time you respawn, and all this because you didnt want to waste a clip (or a lot less if more people shoot at it) on the heli. SO SHOOT THAT CHOPPER!!!

Aiming Tips:
Shoot the enemy in the body/chest and then in the head to kill him because, for most guns, even with stopping power it takes 2 bullets to kill.

Shooting Tips:
Another great CoD4 tip is, when firing any of the weapons (assault rifles, sub machine guns such as the mp5) at a distance, always try to fire single controlled shots (to avoid recoil which will just throw your aim off), just move the cross hair in a smooth motion covering any area where you think the enemy might appear. Practice just clicking the mouse once each time. I know it’s so easy just to press it a few times in quick succession when there’s much action going on.

The Ten Commandments

  1. A good CoD4 tip is to cook a grenade before throwing it. Time it so that it has little to no delay when it reaches its destination. That way no one can run or return the grenade.
  2. Bouncing grenades/stun off of the lip on a doorway is a great way to keep your cover and clear a guy possibly hiding in a corner.
  3. Flanking with UAV Jammer and a silencer is a great way to rack kills up, as some rely heavily on their radar when UAV is up (Ghost killing, make a class called stealth)
  4. Claymores in random places where traffic can pass through is a great way to rack up kills and prevent flanking.
  5. Martydom is great if you enjoy running into rooms with enemies (Noobish though 😛 Recommended only on servers where people dont object)
  6. When you’re not shooting reload!!!. Always cover before a reload, switch weapons if you can’t.
  7. Don’t hang around in a doorway, It’s an easy way to get yourself and possibly an angry teammate who wanted by, killed.
  8. A stun followed by a grenade is effective for killing.
  9. Throwing grenades far in front of you in maps like Bog and Countdown are great for clearing enemies on the other side. Even more so if you have the Fragx3. I can’t count the number of times I’ve randomly killed players this way. It also pisses them off seeing that you just randomly tossed one into them.
  10. Sway side to side if spotted by a sniper. it’s harder for him to hit you, and you can unload for a possible kill.
